About

Severndroog Castle is a Grade II* listed Georgian tower situated in Castle Woods, Shooters Hill, South-East London.  The folly, built in 1784, was commissioned by Sir William James' heartbroken widow.  It commemorates his success at fighting pirates off the West coast of India in 1755.  The London County Council took ownership in the 1920s and opened a tea-room and viewing platform with panoramic views over London and beyond.  By the 1980s, it was closed and boarded up and often vandalised.  Now a Building Preservation Trust is fundraising to restore the building and re-open it to the public once more.  The building was featured on BBC2's Restoration in 2004.
